A classic editorial WordPress theme with responsive layouts, modern block styles, system fonts and keyboard-operable navigation.

== Description ==

TechEngage is a classic editorial WordPress theme for publications and independent writers. It retains PHP templates, the Customizer, menus and widgets, including the existing 1.3.0 hero/CTA, card-radius, sidebar-heading, custom-header, block-style and pattern features, and adds a shared design system for the block editor through theme.json. It is not a block theme and does not provide the full-site template editor.

The responsive editorial layout uses locally served CSS and JavaScript and system fonts. Bootstrap, SmartMenus, Font Awesome and the earlier animation dependencies are removed. Standard numbered pagination replaces the previous custom AJAX loading endpoint.

The theme includes a keyboard-operable navigation menu, visible focus treatment, a skip link, readable content typography, responsive media and reduced-motion styling. These features do not constitute a WCAG certification or an accessibility-ready review approval. Content authors must still supply meaningful headings, alternative text, descriptive links and accessible media.

The theme requires WordPress 6.6 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer. See docs/UPGRADE.md for installation, customization and migration guidance.

== Installation ==

1. Back up the current theme directory and database before replacing an existing installation. Test this major update on a staging site first.
2. On a single-site installation, open Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme and select the provided TechEngage ZIP.
3. For Multisite, a super administrator uploads the ZIP through Network Admin > Themes. Make the theme available to the intended site, then activate it in that site's Appearance > Themes screen.
4. Confirm that the active version is 2.0.1. Configure the site title, logo, primary menu, sidebar and footer widgets in the site dashboard.
5. Set the intended front page and posts page under Settings > Reading. Review Appearance > Customize, including the current color and social-link settings.
6. Test the public site, mobile navigation, posts, search, comments and pagination. Follow docs/UPGRADE.md for migration details.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Is this a full-site editing theme? =
No. TechEngage uses classic PHP templates. Its theme.json and editor styles improve block content editing without converting existing pages to block templates.

= Are menus and widgets retained when updating from 1.x? =
The primary menu location and the sidebar-1 and footer_widget_area widget-area IDs are retained. Existing assignments can be reused when the stylesheet slug remains techengage. Review every location and widget after updating; their presentation has changed.

= Do all old Customizer choices carry over? =
The 1.3.0 hero title, subtitle and primary CTA, card radius, sidebar heading size and footer-credit nofollow settings are retained. Saved Facebook, X / Twitter and LinkedIn URLs and new-tab choices remain available through legacy fallbacks. New saves use theme-prefixed setting IDs. Instagram and YouTube controls are also available. The obsolete Google+ field is no longer used. Saved values are not deleted automatically. Old per-element color controls and icon-library options are not a pixel-for-pixel migration. Reconfigure the current controls and inspect the result. See docs/UPGRADE.md.

= Can I keep an existing child theme? =
Review it on staging first. Version 2 changes markup, classes, asset handles and navigation behavior. Child-theme template overrides or CSS written for Bootstrap, SmartMenus or Font Awesome need review and may need rewriting.

= Does the theme contact external services? =
The theme does not collect or transmit visitor data, and does not add analytics, remote font requests or remote front-end libraries. Appearance choices are stored locally by WordPress through the Customizer. Content, embeds, Gravatars, plugins and WordPress core may independently contact external services. Social links navigate to destinations chosen by the site administrator.

= Does this package update the public WordPress.org release? =
No. Installing or sharing this package does not submit it to the WordPress.org Theme Directory. Review and publication there are separate processes.
