A distinctive home for your club, your work and your community. A free block theme built around the native WordPress editor.

== Description ==

Give visitors a clear picture of who you are, what you do and how they can take part. Takt brings generous image layouts, confident typography and carefully aligned content to club websites, artist portfolios, cultural organizations, associations, small businesses and editorial sites.

Start with an editable layout, add your identity and shape the details in the WordPress Site Editor. Choose from seven general-purpose header layouts and four footer layouts, alongside dedicated club starter parts, reusable sections and complete page patterns. Responsive panel menus help visitors explore a larger site, while optional transparent and glass headers give photography more room. Coordinated light and dark colors keep the same visual identity across both modes.

Takt also carries your design into WooCommerce: shop and product pages, descriptions and reviews, cart, checkout and customer account views. Install WooCommerce when you need a shop; the rest of your website works independently.

**Free, with room to grow.** Takt works without a license key, page builder or required plugin. There is no paid Takt edition or feature-unlock purchase. The bundled club starter pages use editable WordPress blocks. Structured content management belongs in separate plugins, so your data can remain available when changing themes. Existing Takt Site Features installations remain compatible; its content modules are not bundled with this theme.

**A site you can make your own.** Change menus, footer columns, colors, typography, pages and templates with native WordPress tools. The supplied designs are starting points, and your saved Site Editor customizations are retained across theme updates. The theme uses system fonts and includes English source text with Albanian, Italian, French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, Spanish, Norwegian Bokmål, Finnish, Icelandic, Turkish, Greek and Polish translations, plus formal German and German for Switzerland.

**Understand the showcase.** The football screenshot illustrates Takt with club content and configured navigation. The normal WordPress.org preview uses eight native, editable club starter pages with bundled images and no required plugin. Installing the theme alone does not automatically import the configured companion demonstration site. Replace the demonstration photographs, example fixtures and club details with your own content. A working shop requires your own WooCommerce products, payments and shipping configuration.

The following guide explains the layout choices and how to use them.

**Design Takt.** Open Appearance > Design Takt to adjust light and dark colors, body and heading fonts, content widths and button corners with a real website preview. Compare desktop, tablet and mobile views before saving. Save changes applies only the settings you changed; Discard changes restores the saved preview, and individual fields can return to their inherited defaults. Settings use native WordPress Global Styles and preserve other saved styles, custom CSS and existing content. If another editor changes the saved design, reload and review your draft before saving again.

**A palette built around your identity.** The palette assistant uses a brand color to suggest coordinated light and dark colors. Review the effective button colors and their contrast before applying a suggestion to your draft, then preview the website and save deliberately. Existing colors are retained until you choose a change.

**Find the right header and footer.** The Header and Footer tabs list your parts and their references in the site's templates, including saved customizations. Open a part or a template directly in the native editor. Other variants remain available starting points until you deliberately use them. An incomplete reference scan is identified as such; template references do not claim which pages visitors currently see. The Site areas tab also opens navigation, templates and pages for native editing.

**Color scheme.** Every color in the palette can carry a dark counterpart. New installations show the light/dark switch by default. For existing sites already using Takt Site Features, Appearance > Customize > Color scheme lets you force light or dark, follow the visitor's system setting, or retain visitor choice. The theme remains fully functional without the plugin and continues to read its saved color mode. Supporting browsers such as Safari also tint their surrounding interface to the active page surface. Place the switch anywhere with the pattern "Light and dark switch".

**Styles.** Browse Styles in the Site Editor offers a Dark variation, three color palettes (Warm, Forest, Signal) and two typography sets (Editorial, Serif headings). Pick one at a time; the color variations each carry their own dark counterpart, which is why the editor lists them as whole styles rather than as a palette you can mix with a font set.

**Header layouts.** Seven general-purpose template parts sit in the Header area, alongside the dedicated club starter header: the default (logo left, menu centered), logo centered with the menu beneath, logo above the menu, a wrapping menu that remains visible, search and actions in one row, a full-width navigation row with panel menus, and flexible rows. The flexible layout uses unlocked native Rows and Groups so you can rearrange the logo, menu, search and actions or add your own blocks. Swap layouts in the Site Editor; no code is required. Every layout uses the native Navigation block and your own menu. Select the outer header Group to adjust sticky positioning and mobile button visibility under Header behavior. Use layout default retains the existing layout's choice.

**Footer layouts.** Four general-purpose choices accompany the dedicated club starter footer: a compact row, a brand/menu/search layout, navigation columns and flexible columns. The flexible layout uses native Columns, Groups and Rows for your own widths, order and content. The navigation-column footer starts with Home, up to six public top-level pages and the configured public privacy page, split into separate link groups alongside the brand and search. It omits empty groups and does not repeat the header menu. Every group and link is editable: select an independent footer menu, add a column or use the search column for visitor links. Links stay visible on small screens, and the default submenu settings show nested links as part of the list. Existing saved footer choices remain unchanged.

**Helper classes.** The patterns use a handful of classes you can reuse on your own blocks: `takt-intro` for a kicker and lead, `takt-stat` for a figure, `takt-step__number` for a numbered circle, `takt-member` for a person card with a flush image, `takt-quote-line` for a one-line quote, `takt-photo` for an image that fills its column, `takt-header__cta` for a compact header button, and `takt-overlay-only` for a menu item that only appears in the mobile overlay. Add `takt-header--sticky` to the header group to make it stick.

**Compact menu.** Select the header Navigation block and choose the optional "Compact menu" style. It uses a three-line menu icon and puts the existing visitor color switch inside the open menu. The switch returns to its original position when the full navigation fits. The native "Never" overlay setting keeps it in the header. Existing menus retain their chosen style.

**Navigation styles.** Choose "Panel menu" on a header Navigation block for wide, two-column desktop dropdowns. Its desktop dropdowns and mobile menu open directly below the header, keeping the logo visible, and scroll within the available screen height. Deeper submenus expand within their column, keeping all levels inside the viewport. "Pill menu" gives top-level links rounded hit areas and highlights the current route. The panel header includes native search and opens submenus on click. On small screens, both styles use the native menu dialog and expandable submenus. For a call to action, add a native Buttons block to the header actions and link it to an existing page; apply the `takt-header__cta` class for compact spacing. These are optional choices, so updates preserve existing headers and menu styles.

**Header transparency.** Select the outer header Group block and choose "Transparent" or "Glass" under Styles. Transparent overlays a full-width hero with light controls and becomes solid after scrolling; on pages without a hero it keeps a readable solid surface. Glass supplies a softly translucent surface and background blur. Dropdowns and mobile menus keep their independently saved colors. Existing headers retain their selected style until an editor changes it.

**Responsive heroes and video.** Full-width Cover blocks and supported Takt heroes keep their native desktop height setting. Responsive hero height adds optional tablet and mobile minimum heights; leave an override empty to inherit, and long content can still grow. Use your own video and poster in a native Cover for a video background. A visible Play/Pause control, reduced-motion support and pauses while keyboard focus is inside the hero help visitors control movement. Use a normal Video block when sound, captions or a transcript are needed. No demo video is bundled. The photo Hero slideshow is a separate feature of the optional Takt Site Features plugin, with its own device-specific height controls.

**Optional news and announcement tickers.** Insert News ticker or Announcement ticker from the native pattern inserter when your site needs one. News uses an ordinary Query Loop with your choice of posts and categories; announcements use an editable List for dates, opening hours or ticket information. Visitors can move between items or pause automatic changes. Hover, keyboard focus and reduced-motion preferences pause movement, while the complete list remains readable without JavaScript. Tickers are never added automatically to existing pages.

**Optional mobile actions.** Add the Mobile action bar pattern when visitors need quick access to selected pages or contact links. Its buttons and icons remain native editable blocks. It accounts for the device's safe area, open menus, focused inputs and checkout, and retains ordinary links when JavaScript is unavailable. Existing sites receive no action bar automatically.

**News and articles.** Single posts use wide titles and featured images above a readable article column, with related stories alongside where space permits. The default News magazine leads with one prominent story. For a denser index, choose "Compact club news template" in the native design picker for the Site Editor's Blog Home template, or insert the "Compact club news" Query design. Both news designs use native queries, pagination, complete headlines and optional photographs. Saved templates remain unchanged until you choose and save another design. Supplied article and title-free listing layouts use a consistent 40-pixel start below the header; explicit spacing, visible-title choices and hero layouts remain editable.

**Room for video stories.** Choose the optional Video article template for a broad title and media stage followed by readable supporting text and native post navigation. It uses the post's existing content and retains its authored media position. The separate, optional Takt Site Features plugin supplies Club TV organization and controls for supported external embeds; no recording or broadcasting service is bundled with the theme.

**Links and accessibility.** Links follow native WordPress behavior, including any target you choose in the editor. Supplied navigation landmarks have concise translated names, and ordinary text links have a single underline with a non-color-only hover change. The included accessibility.txt documents keyboard, browser and assistive-technology checks, support details and coverage limits. A complete accessibility audit has not been completed; the theme does not claim full WCAG conformance or the accessibility-ready tag.

**Language.** English is the source language for labels, menu controls and sample content. Bundled catalogs cover Albanian (sq), Italian (it_IT), French (fr_FR), German (de_DE), Dutch (nl_NL), Swedish (sv_SE), Portuguese for Portugal (pt_PT), Spanish for Spain (es_ES), Norwegian Bokmål (nb_NO), Finnish (fi), Icelandic (is_IS), Turkish (tr_TR), Greek (el) and Polish (pl_PL), plus formal German (de_DE_formal) and German for Switzerland (de_CH). Select the public language in Settings > General > Site Language. Each user can choose a separate administration language in Users > Profile. Saved navigation labels and page content remain as authored; new patterns use the language selected when inserted.

**Regional dates and times.** The website's Date Format, Time Format and Timezone settings control full dates and times. US month/day/year and 12-hour clocks, European day/month/year and 24-hour clocks, and custom formats are supported. WordPress provides translated month and weekday names. Changing a language never changes saved format preferences or stored content.

**Content you did not write.** Most sites are older than their theme, and their posts still carry classic-editor markup: bare images with a hardcoded width, `alignleft` and `alignright`, `.wp-caption`, empty paragraphs. Takt styles all of it, so a site looks tidy the day it switches over instead of after someone re-edits five hundred posts. Floats are capped at half the column and dissolve on small screens, captions and corner radii match the block editor's, and the empty paragraphs the classic editor left behind are dropped. The sheet loads on single posts and pages only.

**Performance.** Form styling, content presentation and WooCommerce have separate stylesheets: the content sheet loads on single posts and pages, and the WooCommerce sheet only where the shop actually renders. Optional features load their own assets where needed. The theme uses system fonts and makes no requests to an external font service. Design Takt and block-editing controls load in their own administration screens.

== Installation ==

1. In your site's admin, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
2. Search for "Takt", then install and activate the theme directly from the WordPress theme directory. If you received a ZIP instead, choose Upload Theme and select that file.
3. Open Appearance > Design Takt to preview colors, fonts and layout settings. Use its Header and Footer tabs, or Appearance > Editor, to edit the logo, menus and native template parts.
4. Add a page and choose a suggested Takt layout, or open the inserter, choose Patterns and pick one of "Takt pages". Replace the sample text, images and button destinations with your own content before publishing.
5. Set your homepage under Settings > Reading. Create and select your navigation in the Site Editor, and check the site title, logo and contact details. The contact starter is a layout; add your preferred form block or shortcode if you want to receive inquiries.

== Updates and recovery ==

Back up both the database and wp-content before an update. The database contains your pages, navigation, Site Editor templates, global styles and theme settings; a copy of the theme directory alone does not preserve these customizations.

First install the new ZIP on a staging copy using Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme. WordPress offers to replace the installed version. Inspect the displayed versions before confirming. After updating, check your homepage, menus, saved templates, colors and mobile layout. Sites using WooCommerce should also check their product, cart, checkout and account pages with their configured integrations.

Keep customizations in the Site Editor, a child theme or a separate site plugin. Editing the parent theme's files directly means those edits are replaced by the next update. Saved Site Editor templates take precedence over new theme files; updates preserve those customizations, so a newly supplied default layout does not automatically replace a customized one.

Takt also versions its visual defaults. An existing installation updated from a version before 0.6 keeps the compatible page, article, archive and shop presentation. A new installation starts with the current presentation. Automatic page and archive titles are hidden by default in both designs. To show one page's title deliberately, select "Page with visible title" in its template settings. Content headings and saved customer templates retain their explicit choices. For existing sites already using Takt Site Features, Appearance > Customize > Takt design and compatibility lets the site owner choose a design and change the global default title preference. The generic Shop heading remains visually hidden with its accessible heading retained; the standard Checkout page heading is omitted. The theme continues to read these saved theme mods without the plugin. Later updates retain the choices and never replace saved Site Editor templates or page content.

For a theme-only rollback, upload the previously saved Takt ZIP and replace the current version. This restores theme files while retaining database content and settings. If the update included WordPress, plugin or database changes, use a matching full-site backup and that component's recovery procedure. Verify the restored site before reopening it to visitors.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= How do I switch the site to dark mode? =

For existing sites already using Takt Site Features, open Appearance > Customize > Color scheme. "Dark" renders every page dark. "Follow the visitor's system setting" uses the visitor's operating system preference. "Visitor chooses" shows a switch in the header and remembers the choice in the browser. The plugin supplies these optional controls; deactivating it leaves the saved mode and theme rendering unchanged. Native color variations remain available under Appearance > Editor > Styles without the plugin.

= Where do the dark colors come from? =

From `settings.custom.dark` in theme.json: one entry per palette slug. A child theme or an existing Takt Site Features preset can override them. Colors that sit on a photo, and surfaces you deliberately colored, keep their light look in dark mode.

= Why does my mobile menu stay dark when the page switches to light? =

The Navigation block retains its saved overlay colors. To make the mobile menu follow the page palette, set its overlay background to Base and its overlay text to Contrast in the Site Editor. Explicit brand colors and custom colors remain fixed by design; a theme update does not replace those choices. Desktop dropdowns use their own text and background colors rather than inheriting the transparent header's photo colors.

= Can I use a different header layout? =

Yes. Appearance > Design Takt shows which templates reference each header. Open the relevant template in the Site Editor, select the header and use Replace to choose another part. Seven general-purpose header parts and four footer parts ship with the theme, together with a dedicated club starter header and footer. Choose "Header: flexible rows" for free arrangement with native blocks, "Header: menu always visible" for wrapping navigation, or "Footer: flexible columns" for your own column widths and content. Existing saved parts are not replaced by a theme update.

= Does it work with WooCommerce? =

Templates for the shop, a product category, a single product, the cart, the checkout, the account page and the order confirmation ship with the theme, and their stylesheet loads only where the shop actually renders.

Product collections, product prices, sale badges, product details and native product filters follow the theme. The catalog's Outline style, button width and column count remain editable through WooCommerce's block settings. Filter styling is verified against WooCommerce 11.1.

Both block and classic shortcode cart/checkout are supported. Block cart and checkout use Takt's palette, type, buttons, mobile submit surface and quantity badges while retaining WooCommerce's responsive layout. Keep the cart/checkout blocks in the assigned page content. Configure and test your chosen shipping, tax and payment methods before accepting orders; the theme supplies presentation, not a payment service.

The generic Shop title stays visually hidden and the Checkout page title is omitted entirely. Product names and the checkout's individual steps remain visible. Automatic archive titles, including product-category headings, follow the site's title preference and are hidden by default. A sticky desktop order summary keeps 20 pixels below the sticky Takt header, accounting for the WordPress toolbar. Mobile checkout retains WooCommerce's native flow. Prices respect the store's currency, position, number separators and precision; letter-based symbols such as CHF and kr receive one space beside the amount in product, cart and checkout views.

The default checkout template uses a compact, editable "Complete your order" introduction at 18 pixels, aligned with the form. It replaces the large standard page title without adding a banner or repeating the checkout steps.

= How do I change the fonts? =

Browse Styles in the Site Editor and pick a typography set, or set your own font families under Styles > Typography. The theme ships system font stacks only, so there are no external font requests.

* Kept store notices, action links and country/region selectors readable in both color schemes, including WooCommerce status-specific styles.
* Corrected heading block markup and made complete page layouts available in the native page starter selection.
* Page starters keep their own H1; pages without a heading receive one hidden title in the completed main region.
* Made the color switch discoverable and all five header/footer parts translatable. Replaced unfinished contact defaults with native search.
* Completed the bundled German, formal German and Swiss German catalogs, including editor metadata.
* Added isolated WordPress tests, a compatibility CI workflow and a reproducible installable package builder.

= 0.2.0 =
* Accessibility: section headings in five patterns and in the product archive start at h2, the "page without title" template falls back to a hidden h1 only when the content brings none, read-more links carry the post title, the theme defines its own screen-reader-text rule, the two navigations have names, the submenu toggle is a 24px target, main is focusable from the skip link, and focus rings are split: links take currentColor, buttons take it inside the button so the ring never lands white on white.
* Added templates for the cart, the checkout, the account page and the order confirmation, so every shop page keeps the site header, footer and content width.
* The account page uses the account template even when its slug is translated; the template can also be picked by hand.
* Lifted WooCommerce's 1000px cap on cart, checkout and account, and neutralised the clearfix pseudo elements that displaced grid columns.
* Store notices, the checkout toggles and their icons follow the palette; checkout checkboxes have a 44px target.
* Added three header layouts and two footers as template parts.
* Added ten section patterns and three full page layouts.
* Added color variations Warm, Forest and Signal and typography variations Editorial and Serif headings.
* The light and dark switch is a pattern now, not a block; a forced dark site no longer needs JavaScript.

* Form controls use an accessible border color and have a visible focus style.
* One banner and one contentinfo landmark per page, one skip link, and an H1 on the posts page.
* Added shadow, gradient and duotone presets and h5/h6 sizes.

= 0.1.0 =
* Initial release.
