A fast news and magazine theme with a header and footer builder, colour schemes, bundled fonts and starter sites.

== Description ==

Republic is a theme for news sites, magazines and blogs. It is built on a trimmed Bootstrap 5.3, loads no jQuery on the front end, and keeps every setting in the Customizer.

* **Header and footer builder.** Arrange rows, with any element left, centre or right, and a separate layout for phones. The five classic header styles are still there, and each one is also a preset of the builder.
* **Colours and fonts in one place.** Six colour schemes, an editable palette, and font settings for text, headings and menus. Eight font families are bundled with the theme, so nothing is loaded from other servers.
* **Front page blocks.** News ticker, featured tiles and a list block above the posts, each from the categories you pick.
* **Settings per post and page.** Sidebar layout, full-width content, hidden title or featured image, transparent header.
* **Starter sites.** Three ready-made sites, imported with the free One Click Demo Import plugin.
* **Built for search engines and screen readers.** One H1 per page, breadcrumbs with structured data, keyboard-friendly menus, colours that meet WCAG AA, and it steps aside when Yoast SEO or Rank Math is active.
* **WooCommerce.** Shop sidebars, and cart and account links for the header.

== Installation ==

1. In your admin panel go to Appearance > Themes and click "Add New Theme".
2. Search for "Republic", or click "Upload Theme" and choose the zip file, then click "Install".
3. Click "Activate".
4. Open Appearance > Republic for a short checklist and the starter sites.

Do not edit the theme files: use a child theme for changes to templates, and Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS for styles.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= I updated from version 2. Why do I not see the header builder? =

Sites that used an earlier version keep their header and footer exactly as they were. To use the builder, go to Appearance > Customize > Header > Header Type and choose "Header builder". It starts from the header style you use now. The footer has the same choice under Footer > Footer Type.

= Does my content that uses Bootstrap classes still work? =

Yes. The theme itself now loads only the parts of Bootstrap it uses, and a second stylesheet with the rest of Bootstrap for page content. Sites updated from version 2 load that second stylesheet automatically; new sites do not. The switch is Appearance > Customize > Theme Options > Performance > "Bootstrap classes in page content": turn it off if your posts and widgets use no Bootstrap classes (it saves about 120 KB), or on if a new site needs them.

= How do I import a starter site? =

Go to Appearance > Republic > Starter sites, install the One Click Demo Import plugin from there, and choose a site. Import into a new site: it adds posts, menus and widgets, and changes the theme settings.

= Where did my Custom CSS go? =

It is still applied. New CSS belongs in Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS; the theme's old Custom CSS box is shown only while it still holds CSS.

== Changelog ==

= 3.0.0 =
* New: header and footer builder (Customize > Header / Footer). Rows with left, centre and right zones, a separate phone layout with a slide-out panel, sticky header, search as icon or form, logo height. Sites updated from version 2 keep their classic header and footer until the builder is switched on.
* New: colour schemes with an editable palette; every colour of the theme follows it. The Classic scheme keeps the colours of earlier versions, adjusted where text was hard to read.
* New: typography settings for text, headings and menus, with eight bundled font families (no requests to other servers).
* New: one Settings box for posts, pages and products: sidebar layout (now with "Theme default"), full-width content, hide the title, the featured image, the breadcrumbs or what sits under the header, transparent header.
* New: theme page under Appearance with a getting-started checklist, starter sites (imported with One Click Demo Import), recommended plugins and help.
* New: the Customizer is organised into panels: Global, Header, Featured Post Blocks, Blog / Archive, Single Post, Footer, WooCommerce and Theme Options.
* Faster: the stylesheet shrank from 556 KB to about 180 KB, scripts are deferred and need no jQuery, fonts are served locally, and the page-loading bar is off on new sites.
* Accessibility and SEO: one H1 per page, labelled menu buttons, menus that work from the keyboard and on touch screens, readable colour contrast, breadcrumbs and structured data that step aside for Yoast SEO and Rank Math.
* Security: output is escaped and input sanitized throughout.
* Fixed: on phones the menu panel of header styles two and three had dark links on a dark background, the top bar panel of style one looked empty, and menu and close buttons were hard to see.
* Fixed: with no menu assigned, the fallback menu stayed hidden on phones.
* Fixed: the Popular Posts widget stayed empty until posts had been viewed.
* Fixed: with WooCommerce, the cart link of header style one caused a fatal error on pages where WooCommerce had loaded no cart (for example a "not found" page under /wp-json/).
* Fixed: in post lists a post without a featured image had an empty link, and the first "not found" page design skipped a heading level.
* Fixed: the featured tiles changed the page's own post, so WooCommerce product pages could show a blog post's breadcrumb.
* Fixed: misspelled and misleading setting labels in the Customizer.
* Fixed: grid images now fill their cards; comment badges, the news ticker on phones and the site title are laid out properly.
* Fixed: the theme's Custom CSS box replaced WordPress's Additional CSS; both work now.
* Changed: on new sites the featured tiles show on the front page and the blog page only ("Show on" is set to "Index and Home"). Sites updated from an earlier version keep them on every page until that setting is changed.
* Changed: requires WordPress 6.4 and PHP 7.4. Built on Bootstrap 5.3; the theme loads only the parts it uses; the rest stays available for page content ("Bootstrap classes in page content" in Theme Options > Performance, on by default on updated sites).
* Changed: the settings marked "(Pro Only)" that did nothing in the free theme are gone. In their place the Customizer shows what Republic Pro adds, as previews with a link (colour schemes, typography, header elements, breadcrumb styles, colours). No setting of the free theme is locked.

= 2.8.1 =
* Security: the live search and "load more" requests now sanitize their input, cap how many posts they return and escape post titles.
* Security: post titles in link titles and the theme's search form are escaped; page and post layout boxes sanitize what they save.
* Fixed: pressing Enter in the theme's search form did nothing; search results open again.
* Fixed: a JavaScript error on every keystroke in the search box, and a PHP warning when loading more posts.

= 2.4 =
* With new framework
