SEO that checks itself: titles, sitemaps and schema, plus link checks, redirects, safe repairs with undo, a change guardian and a regression monitor.

== Description ==

Most SEO plugins help you write titles. Orbitstem SEO does that too, and then keeps checking that your site still says what you think it says. It finds broken links, redirect chains and pages that quietly turned noindex. It fixes what can be fixed safely, and every change it makes can be undone.

Everything runs on your own server. No account, no upsells, no tracking, no external services.

= Everything you expect from an SEO plugin =

* **SEO titles and meta descriptions** with templates for every post type and taxonomy, and per-item overrides in the block editor sidebar, with a live search-result preview and length guidance.
* **Canonical URLs** for posts, pages, custom post types, taxonomy, author and date archives, including paginated pages.
* **noindex and nofollow** per item, per content type, and for author and date archives, through WordPress's own robots API.
* **Open Graph and X (Twitter) cards** with a default social image.
* **XML sitemaps** built on WordPress's own sitemap. They leave out noindexed items and items with a custom canonical URL, and include last-modified dates.
* **Schema.org structured data** as one connected JSON-LD graph: WebSite, Organization or Person, WebPage, Article and BreadcrumbList.
* **Breadcrumbs** through the `[orbitstem_breadcrumbs]` shortcode or the `orbitstem_seo_breadcrumbs()` template function.
* **Custom post types and taxonomies**, such as WooCommerce products, are picked up automatically.

= SEO Issues: a scan that shows the evidence =

A background scan looks at your whole site and lists what needs attention, with the exact posts, links and addresses involved, and how to fix each one:

* broken internal links and images;
* links that go through a redirect, and redirect chains;
* content that no other post links to;
* sitemap entries that fail, redirect, are noindex or point their canonical elsewhere;
* indexable content missing from the sitemap;
* duplicate or conflicting SEO tags printed by the theme or another plugin.

The scan runs weekly (or daily) on its own, in small background steps.

= Repair Center: fixes you can preview and undo =

* Update links that go through a redirect so they point straight at the final page.
* Flatten redirect chains into a single step.
* Update links to pages whose address changed.
* Remove broken internal links while keeping their text (always asks first).

Each repair shows exactly what will change before you apply it. Afterwards it is checked and recorded, and it can be rolled back from History unless the item was edited since. If you want, the safe repairs can run automatically after each scan, with the same checks: a repair that fails its check is undone at once.

= Change Guardian: no more silent SEO accidents =

Before you change a page's address, set it to noindex or trash it, Orbitstem SEO shows what depends on it: links from other posts, menu items, redirects and sitemap status.

* When a published page gets a new address, the old address is redirected automatically, and the links to it can be updated in one step.
* "Trash (check impact)" lets you choose a redirect before a page is removed.
* Switching on "Discourage search engines" or hiding content types from search asks for confirmation.

Every such change is recorded and can be undone.

= Regression Monitor: catch changes you did not make =

Weekly (or daily) snapshots record what each page tells search engines: address, title, noindex, canonical and sitemap status, plus a sample of pages as actually rendered. Comparing two snapshots shows what changed and whether a recorded edit explains it.

Unexplained changes, often caused by a theme or plugin update, appear in SEO Issues and can be emailed to the site admin. The Monitor compares your site with itself; it does not track search rankings.

= Redirects and 404 log =

* 301, 302, 307 and 308 redirects and 410 Gone, exact or pattern-based, with hit counts.
* Rules can never redirect the admin area, login page or REST API, so you cannot lock yourself out.
* A 404 log shows what visitors could not find, with one click to create a redirect. It stores paths and hit counts only, never IP addresses.

= Bulk editing and spreadsheets =

* Edit SEO titles, descriptions and noindex for many items in one table. The editor protects against overwriting someone else's changes.
* Export to CSV, edit in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice, and import again. You see a preview of every change, and every row that cannot be imported (with its line number and reason), before anything is saved. Imports can be undone in one click.

= Switching from another SEO plugin =

Import titles, descriptions, canonical URLs and robots settings from **Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress and The SEO Framework**, plus Yoast SEO's title templates. You see a preview first. Only empty fields are filled, the other plugin's data is never changed, and the import can be rolled back.

While another SEO plugin is active, Orbitstem SEO prints no head tags (safe mode) and tells you why, so you never get duplicate titles. It never deactivates or changes another plugin.

= Private by design =

No account, no tracking and no calls to external services. The scan requests pages of your own site only.

If you turn on "Check external links" (off by default), the scan also sends one request to each website your content links to, at most once a week per address, to see whether the link still works. No data about your site is sent beyond the request itself.

== Installation ==

1. In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Add New, search for "Orbitstem SEO", then install and activate it.
2. Open Orbitstem SEO > Dashboard and click "Run scan" to get your first list of issues.
3. Review the title and description templates under Orbitstem SEO > Settings. The defaults work for most sites.
4. Edit any post, page or term to set a custom title, description, canonical URL or noindex. In the block editor the fields are in the "Orbitstem SEO" panel of the post sidebar.

Coming from another SEO plugin? Open Orbitstem SEO > Import before you deactivate it.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Is Orbitstem SEO free? =

Yes. Every feature described here is in this plugin. There is no paid version, no account and no license key.

= Can I switch from Yoast SEO, Rank Math or another SEO plugin? =

Yes. Install Orbitstem SEO, open Orbitstem SEO > Import and preview what will be copied, then run the import. Your titles, descriptions, canonical URLs and noindex settings are copied, and the other plugin's data is left untouched. While the other plugin is still active, Orbitstem SEO stays in safe mode and prints nothing. Deactivate the other plugin when you are happy with the result.

= Does it fix problems automatically? =

Only if you switch it on, and only for safe repairs. Under Settings > Automation you can let it update links that go through a permanent (301 or 308) redirect and flatten redirect chains after each scan. Each change is checked right away and undone if the check fails, and every change can be rolled back from Repair > History. Removing broken links always needs your confirmation, because it removes content.

= Can I undo a change Orbitstem SEO made? =

Yes. Every repair, redirect change, import and Guardian action is recorded in Repair > History or Guardian, with a Rollback or Undo button. A rollback is refused only when the item was edited again since, so newer work is never overwritten.

= Does the scan slow down my site? =

No. It runs in the background in small steps (each a few seconds at most), using WordPress's scheduled tasks. On a test site with 10,000 posts and 50,000 links, a first full scan took about two and a half minutes of background work and under 60 MB of memory.

= Do redirects slow down page loads? =

A site with no redirects pays nothing. With redirects, each request costs one indexed database lookup. With 10,000 redirects and 200 pattern rules, that measured about 0.3 ms per request.

= Does it work with my theme? =

Orbitstem SEO sets the title through WordPress's own title functions, so block themes (such as Twenty Twenty-Five) and classic themes that support the title-tag feature show one correct title. The dashboard warns you if a classic theme does not support it.

= Does it work with WooCommerce and custom post types? =

Yes. Custom post types and taxonomies registered by plugins or themes, such as WooCommerce products and product categories, get their own templates, sitemap entries and per-item fields automatically.

= Does it work on multisite? =

Yes. Each site in the network has its own settings, redirects, scan results and history.

= Does the Guardian block me from making changes? =

No. It warns before risky changes, adds a redirect when an address changes (you can turn that off), and records the change so you can undo it. It never prevents a save.

= How do I edit SEO titles in a spreadsheet? =

1. Open Orbitstem SEO > Bulk Editor.
2. Expand "Export or import a spreadsheet (CSV)" and download the CSV.
3. Change the seo_title, meta_description or other SEO columns, but keep the id column.
4. Upload the file. You see exactly what will change before you confirm.

Columns you delete from the file are left as they are. An empty cell removes the custom value, so your template is used.

Files saved by Excel with semicolons or in Windows encoding are read correctly. Cells that start with =, +, - or @ are exported with a leading apostrophe, so spreadsheet programs do not run them as formulas.

= Does deactivating the plugin delete my SEO data? =

No. Deactivating keeps everything. Deleting the plugin removes your settings and per-item SEO fields only if you first tick "Delete all Orbitstem SEO settings and per-item SEO fields" under Settings > Advanced.

= What happens to my redirects if I delete the plugin? =

They are kept, together with the change history, unless you ticked "Delete all Orbitstem SEO settings and per-item SEO fields" first. Scan results and the 404 log are always removed, because they can be rebuilt.

= Who receives monitor emails? =

Only the site's admin email address, and only if you switch on "Monitor alerts". Emails are sent with WordPress's own mail function; no external service is involved.

= Is it translation ready? =

Yes. All text uses the orbitstem-seo text domain and can be translated on translate.wordpress.org.
