A little direction for your navigation.
Setup, troubleshooting and support for Creotec Floating Table of Contents 1.0.0.
Start here
- Activate the plugin, then open Settings → Floating Table of Contents.
- Choose the post types and minimum heading count. New installations use main content with at least two visible headings.
- Choose your colours, icon and desktop position. Try the live preview; switch it to Mobile to test the bottom sheet.
- Save Changes and open an eligible page. Clear your page/CDN cache if old settings remain visible.
The button is missing
Check Enable navigation, selected post types, minimum heading count, mobile visibility, and page exclusions. The page editor has a Hide navigation on this page checkbox. Only visible, nonempty headings count. Password-protected pages, feeds, embeds and 404s are excluded. Your theme must call the standard wp_head() and wp_footer() hooks.
The list includes too much or too little
Automatic mode prefers the article content container. Whole page mode includes other visible headings. Custom selector mode accepts a CSS selector such as .entry-content. A valid selector with no matches produces no menu; an invalid one falls back to automatic detection. Use heading-level checkboxes, exact text exclusions, or add the no-toc class to a heading or its container.
Inline contents and desktop sidebar
Insert the Creotec Table of Contents editor block or use [creotec_toc title="Article contents"]. They share headings and anchors with the floating menu and follow the global display rules. Choose Docked sidebar under Appearance for a persistent desktop list; below its configured width the floating button takes over. Leave sufficient side margin in your theme. The block requires WordPress 6.3 or newer.
The floating button overlaps something
Under Appearance, set the CSS selectors of chat launchers or cookie banners in Move floating button away from these elements. The button moves vertically with a gap, or hides if no space is available. Hide navigation while these overlays are visible accepts selectors for open panels. Show floating button after scrolling sets a reveal distance in pixels. Mobile retains its independent corner and spacing settings. See the layout and placement guide for examples.
Navigation and accessibility
Tab moves between controls inside the modal. Escape, the close button or a backdrop click dismisses it. Choosing a link focuses its heading; ordinary dismissal restores focus to the opener. Search retains matching headings and their parents. Clear search to restore your collapsed branches. Reduced-motion preferences disable smooth movement. Use the contrast warning in settings when choosing colours, and test the final colours with your visitors' needs in mind.
Sharing a section
Select the arrow beside a heading to copy its URL. If clipboard access is unavailable, the modal displays a selected URL for manual copying. Generated anchors work when opening a URL directly, with JavaScript enabled. Editing a heading's text or reordering identical headings can change generated anchors. Use an explicit editor HTML anchor for links that must survive those edits. Headings inside iframes or shadow roots are outside the scan.
Performance and caching
No frontend dependencies or external requests are required. Assets are enqueued only where server-side display rules permit them. Changes to rendered headings are detected in the browser. Clear caches after settings changes. Exempt assets/widget.js from interaction-delayed JavaScript when direct fragment links need to resolve immediately. Avoid running two automatic table-of-contents plugins on the same page.
Privacy and removal
The plugin sends no telemetry, creates no visitor cookies or local-storage entries, and requires no account. Only settings and optional per-page exclusions are stored in WordPress. Clipboard access happens only after a visitor chooses Copy. Deactivation retains data. Deletion removes it only if you enabled the cleanup setting. On multisite the uninstall routine cleans the current site's opted-in data; network-wide cleanup is not automated.
